Vince Gilligan Discloses He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... Currently.
The creative mastermind could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would become a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit sci-fi show reaching its finale—and a second season greenlit and underway—the creative team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
On the Overwhelming Fan Response
Anyone might to get distracted by the rampant praise and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. He is doing his best to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I learn of it from others, and that's intentional. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Will the creator Know the Finale of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff aren’t being guided by audience theories, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… sort of.
“There are some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to discard a decent plan for a superior concept. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, one could always use the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
