The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at each end of the field

Following a drab weekday display in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, the manager chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised strikers - had netted just a single goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having space and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
