A uniquely yellow-fronted residential building visible behind helped us locate the video.
Our team is checking images and video shared earlier today that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he later died to his injuries. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to verify the site of where the pictures were from was based on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.
Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been digital alteration.
