The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami Dade County Mayor.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as sparing festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued since the commencement of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a prosperous future away from worry.”
The event, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, donated by a local firefighter, was christened after the current slang trend of young people shouting “six seven” – originating from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The craze became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently made “six-seven” its 2025 word of the year.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the character of Miami: vibrant, varied, and based in heritage that unite the community. Every time, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
