The Hit Drama Confirmed for 7th Season on the British Broadcaster
The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh installment, confirmed by the BBC.
An upcoming six-episode series written by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.
Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."
The previous series concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but official word only came this week.
Fresh Obstacles for AC-12
The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.
Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to combat misconduct within the police force.
Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case so far."
Fresh Face and Complex Case
A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.
Yet, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, the teaser hinted.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"It's an honor to have had countless fans track the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh season."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."
Cast Reactions
Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "the role of a career".
"Not only the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"
The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."
"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."
Series Legacy
Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.
Broadcasters haven't revealed when the new season will premiere.
The finale of series six drew the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.
However, the corporation announced on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
