The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police are describing as a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, officials have stated the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.
The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.
Below are the victims who have been named at this time.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Described as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She told the events leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still under care, with several in serious condition. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of shots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
