A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such treatments must be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to starting weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the way of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural changes.
