New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”

NYPD issued surveillance images Monday of a man sought in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims were reported.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning about halfway between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a baby.

“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd was inactive this season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.

He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was expected to be a key part of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team all season long while working his way back.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He joined Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
