Israeli citizens mark second anniversary of 7 October attacks as Palestinian peace negotiations continue
Israelis have assembled around the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted offensive on 7 October 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The attack resulted in more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.
Israel reacted by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"Our aggressive adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister stated on that day.
He also promised to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the release of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will never again pose a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities postponed official commemorations until mid-October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still occurred throughout the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of people who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the families themselves, it was aired throughout Israeli television channels.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was held around the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, both sides' delegations met in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of indirect talks to examine the provisions of the agreement.
A senior delegate involved in the discussions indicated that an night meeting of negotiations began at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative explained the earlier meeting ended without concrete outcomes, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not recommence hostilities after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He noted that the talks are "challenging and have not yet produce any real breakthrough," but mentioned that mediators are making efforts to narrow the gaps between the conflicting groups.
Critical Issues in Talks
- A lasting halt to fighting
- The swap of the captives still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of troops from Gaza
- Plans for humanitarian aid provision
- After-conflict management of the region
Citizen Feeling
In the city's Hostages Square previously, young Hagar - whose family member lived through the attack on the gathering, where hundreds were murdered and dozens more were captured by Hamas militants - explained: "No place appears as home now and until every captive come back no one will feel safe."
"Once we see everyone home once more, we can feel relief anew. Then we can begin to rebuild," she concluded.
In front of the prime minister's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to show their support for the families of the hostages. Israel states forty-eight stay in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.
Demonstrator one woman stated: "We need do whatever arrangement required for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need promises that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that approximately 70% of the population desire the conflict to conclude in exchange for the freedom of the abducted.
Palestinian Situation
At the location of the music event, mourners came together to honor the dead.
From that location, the noise of military attacks and explosions could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the heavy Israeli bombardment persisted.
In Gaza City, bombardments were noted in the early hours of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, area and zone areas and in the eastern area of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.
"As the dusk comes, the fear arrives with it," displaced Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike previously, explained.
"Me and my three children are terrified of the air strikes. All the night we are lying together, clinging, especially my youngest child who places his face on me all night."
"Continuously we monitor the reports to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be finalized and that the war will come back to us."
Humanitarian Emergency
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City reported it had accepted the corpses of several people by the daytime, including three who died in an Israeli strike in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the south region of Khan Younis indicated two more fatalities had been transported. A person was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get assistance to the south, health workers said.
