Iran Claims Assault on US Base in Bahrain, Amid Regional Retaliatory Strikes.
Tehran reports attacking a US naval base in Bahrain, as Iran launched missile attacks across the region in retaliation for a significant and continuing assault targeting the nation by the US and Israel.
Large columns of dark smoke were observed billowing from an zone close to the headquarters of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet in Manama, Bahrain. The extent of any damage is not yet known and the US has remained silent.
Missile Defenses Activated
Elsewhere across the region, the UAE, Qatar and the State of Kuwait - which all house American military installations - said they have shot down missiles in their territorial skies.
In the Qatari capital, the Qatari Ministry of Defence stated it had successfully engaged several missiles apparently targeting the Al Udeid Air Base, the biggest US military installation in the region.
Iran's Declared Retaliation
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard said in a statement it was striking American facilities and interests as part of military campaign "Truthful Promise 4", in response for the strikes on Iran carried out by the United States and its ally Israel on Saturday morning.
That initial attack - executed at around 06:15 GMT - has so far focused on locations associated with the Iranian leadership, with US President Donald Trump calling on the people of Iran to rise up against the leadership.
Wider Impacts
In Israel, sirens were heard across the country after the Israel Defense Forces reported it had detected an incoming Iranian missile barrage.
The Ministry of Defence of the UAE stated that the nation has been subjected to a "a blatant attack involving Iranian ballistic missiles".
"UAE air defence systems engaged the projectiles with notable success and shot down a series of missiles," it added.
It said missile fragments landed in a residential area in Abu Dhabi, resulting in some material damage and killing a civilian.
The US Air Force is stationed at Al Dhafra Air Base, to the south of Abu Dhabi, along with the Emirati Air Force.
