California's Governor Acknowledges He Is Weighing a White House Bid in 2028
Gavin Newsom, a leading member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he will determine whether to run for president in 2028 once the 2026 elections conclude.
"Yes, it would be dishonest otherwise," the governor remarked when pressed about seriously considering a White House bid after the 2026 ballots. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."
Newsom's tenure as California's leader ends in January 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. Yet, he noted that any choice is not imminent.
"Fate will determine that," he added.
Rising Profile as a Political Adversary
Newsom has come to the forefront as a prominent critic of the current federal leadership, employing his online platforms and advocating for a initiative that would boost Democratic House seats in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This action has made him a target from political opponents.
Clash on Transportation
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor is indifferent about the state's residents in a recent interview on Fox News. Duffy disclosed plans to withhold taxpayer dollars from the state and warned revoking the power to issue trucking licenses.
"I intend to cut a significant sum from the state," Duffy said, following a recently reported fatal crash in the state involving an undocumented commercial driver that resulted in loss of life and four injuries.
The governor's team pointed out that the federal government had reauthorized the driver's employment on several occasions, which enabled him to obtain a CDL under federal law.
Duffy had earlier announced he was blocking $40 million from the state for ignoring language proficiency rules for truck drivers.
Firm Rebuttal from the Administration
"Former D-list reality star, now Secretary of Transportation, continues to misunderstand national statutes," the governor's team responded in a previous release countering the funding warnings. "For now, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: The state's CDL holders had a fatal crash rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the single state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Statistics are clear. The Trump administration does."
Polling Data and Campaign Considerations
A recently conducted poll showed that 72% of Democrats and 48% of all registered voters indicated that Newsom should run for the White House in 2028. In recent years, public support for the governor has risen to an typical level of about one-third from around 30%, while his unfavorability has fallen from an mean of previous highs to current figures.
Earlier this year, Newsom commented while on a trip several key regions that he had "no clue" about his future for 2028.
He noted his earlier challenges, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the young age of five.
"The idea that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, in and of itself, amazing," he said. "Who the hell knows? I await who steps forward in 2028 and who answers the call. And that remains the key point for the American people."
