Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a statement.
Officers state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they added.
Officers then discovered many other smeared cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report initial examinations show the fluid was likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; officials are presently not aware of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
Local authorities said they were working "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the public for tips.
A senior representative commented the vandalism rendered him stunned and had to be addressed quickly.
"This act affects the core of Hanau and reopens the pain of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he posted on social media, mentioning the death of nine victims by a gunman focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in 2020.
