Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Earns a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network launched a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often marked by dark humor, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat style.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about observing this lovable family navigate their daily lives.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its current layer of irony. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

The Path Forward

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
